Cost of ownership
Citation operating costs
What it really costs to own a Citation — honest numbers from operators who track this data every day.
Every Citation jet shares the same fundamental operating cost structure. The difference between a Mustang, CJ2, or Excel isn't the categories — it's the scale. Before purchasing, we help clients think in three simple terms:
- What will it cost me annually, regardless of flying?
- What does it cost per hour from A to B?
- What should I realistically budget for annual maintenance?

Fixed Costs
Expenses you incur whether you fly 10 hours or 300 hours
Insurance
Insurance includes:
- Hull coverage (protects your aircraft)
- Liability coverage (protects you from damage to others)
Premiums vary significantly based on:
- Pilot experience
- Time in type
- Training provider
- Aircraft value
- Owner-flown vs professionally crewed
This is one of the largest variable fixed costs in the first year of ownership.
Maintenance Tracking Software
Most owners use professional tracking systems to monitor inspections, component life limits, and compliance. Pricing varies depending on provider and aircraft complexity.
Navigation & Weather Subscriptions
- Database subscriptions vary by avionics platform (Garmin vs Collins).
- XM weather subscriptions average approximately $800/year.
Recurrent Training
Annual simulator training is typically required for each pilot, with specific requirements influenced by insurance providers, experience level, and aircraft type.
Hangar
Hangar costs vary widely based on location, availability, and facility type. High-demand airports and premium markets can differ significantly from more accessible regions.
Aircraft Cleaning & Preservation
Regular washing and waxing — especially in saltwater environments — preserves paint, resale value, and corrosion protection.
Management
Owners may:
- Self-manage
- Hire a management company
- Employ a chief pilot
Management ensures maintenance compliance, database updates, insurance renewals, crew scheduling, and operational legality. This is often underestimated by first-time owners.
Direct Operating Costs
Expenses incurred when the aircraft flies
Fuel
National retail averages fluctuate. Contract fuel programs can significantly reduce cost.
Fuel burn varies by:
- Trip length
- Cruise altitude
- Payload
- Environmental conditions
For example, a CJ2 typically blocks around 140 gallons per hour.
- Long, high-altitude cruise may reduce this to 115 gph.
- Short, low-altitude trips may exceed 160 gph.
Real-world mission matters more than brochure numbers.
Engine Programs (Reserves)
Most Citations operate on engine maintenance programs. These function as hourly reserve accounts that transfer with the aircraft upon sale.
Top-tier programs cover:
- Hot section inspections
- Major overhauls
- Many unplanned events
Current approximate rates:
- Mustang & CJ series: ~$500–550/hour
- Excel series: ~$790/hour
Maintenance
Scheduled, consumable, and unscheduled upkeep
Inspection Cycles
Maintenance cycles vary by model and inspection scope.
- Aircraft are inspected at least annually.
- Many models require inspections every 6 months.
- Larger "doc" events occur every 3–4 years depending on model.
Annual maintenance cost depends heavily on:
- Where you are in the inspection cycle
- Shop selection
- Aircraft condition at acquisition
Consumables & Components
Items such as:
- Batteries
- Tires
- Brakes
- Generators (often 1,000-hour overhaul cycles)
must be budgeted.
Unplanned Maintenance
Unscheduled events are part of jet ownership and cannot be precisely forecasted. Proper pre-purchase inspections significantly reduce exposure — but never eliminate it.
Real-world case study: Citation CJ2 annual budget
These are actual 2025–2026 numbers for a professionally managed Citation CJ2 flown 150 hours a year — carried on our fleet insurance policy, with pilot compensation and crew travel billed directly to the owner, so they sit outside the budget below.
This is one real aircraft. We track this exact level of detail for every Citation we manage — contact us for a budget built around your model and mission.
