Citation CJ2 / CJ2+
Stretched 525-series cabin with FL450 capability and strong single-pilot performance
Overview
The Citation CJ2 and CJ2+ are stretched, higher-performing members of the Citation 525 family, offering more cabin length, more fuel capacity, higher cruise speeds, and FL450 capability compared with the original CJ/CJ1 series. The CJ2 is often viewed as one of the most efficient ways to step into a larger Citation cabin while preserving single-pilot capability and manageable operating economics.
The Citation CJ2, produced from 2000 through approximately 2006 with roughly 236–241 aircraft built, added approximately 2.5 feet of cabin length over the CJ/CJ1 platform and increased fuel capacity to approximately 3,932 pounds. This provides a meaningful boost in range and passenger comfort while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency. Many CJ2 aircraft have been upgraded with Garmin GTN 750/750Xi navigators, WAAS/LPV capability, ADS-B solutions, and other avionics improvements. NBAA IFR range is commonly listed near 1,500 nm, while practical passenger missions are typically planned in the 1,000–1,250 nm range depending on payload, reserves, winds, temperature, and routing.
The Citation CJ2+ added Collins Pro Line 21 avionics, FADEC-equipped Williams FJ44-3A engines, improved high-altitude performance, higher MTOW, and a significantly higher zero fuel weight. Produced from approximately 2005/2006 through 2014 with roughly 223–226 aircraft built, the CJ2+ is the more refined and typically more desirable variant. Published high-speed cruise figures are commonly cited in the 407–413 KTAS range, and practical passenger missions are often planned around 1,100–1,300 nm.
A key difference between the CJ2 and CJ2+ is zero fuel weight. The original CJ2's limited ZFW can affect payload planning on passenger-heavy missions — this is the aircraft's well-known constraint that prospective buyers should understand. The CJ2+ addressed this with an improved ZFW of approximately 9,700 pounds, which meaningfully expands payload flexibility.
Typical cabin layouts include a forward side-facing seat or refreshment area, a four-place club, two forward-facing seats, and an aft lavatory that may be belted depending on configuration. The cabin keeps the familiar 525 cross-section — approximately 57 inches high and 58 inches wide — while increasing cabin length to approximately 13 ft 7 in. Fuel burn is commonly planned around the 140-GPH class, though it varies with altitude, weight, temperature, power setting, and mission length.
Key features
- Stretched 525-series cabin, approximately 13 ft 7 in long
- Same 57 in cabin height and 58 in cabin width common to the 525 line
- Single-pilot certified with FL450 service ceiling
- CJ2: approx. 236–241 produced (2000–2006); practical cruise approximately 400 KTAS
- CJ2: commonly upgraded with Garmin GTN 750/750Xi and WAAS/LPV capability
- CJ2+: Collins Pro Line 21 avionics (integrated, not hybrid)
- CJ2+: FADEC-equipped Williams FJ44-3A engines; published cruise 407–413 KTAS
- CJ2+: improved zero fuel weight to approx. 9,700 lb — resolves CJ2 payload constraint
- CJ2+: higher MTOW of 12,500 lb vs. CJ2 at 12,375 lb
- CJ2: ZFW of 9,300 lb — understand this limit before buying
- Fuel burn commonly planned around the 140-GPH range; varies by mission profile
