Citation CJ
The original Model 525 CitationJet — foundation of the CJ series
Overview
The original CitationJet, commonly known as the Citation CJ, launched the Model 525 family and became the foundation for one of the most successful light-jet lines ever built. First delivered in 1993, the CJ replaced the earlier Citation and Citation I concept with a more efficient Williams-powered design, a new laminar-flow wing, a T-tail, and single-pilot certification.
The CJ was not simply an updated legacy Citation. Cessna used a modified Citation forward fuselage, but paired it with a new wing and tail design to create a lighter, more efficient entry-level jet. NASA-assisted natural laminar-flow wing development helped improve efficiency, with a design goal of extending laminar flow over approximately 35 percent of the wing chord.
In real-world operation, the original CJ is valued for simple systems, manageable operating costs, strong runway performance, and Citation support. Owners should think of it as a highly capable regional jet, typically cruising in the mid-300-knot range with practical missions often around 800–1,000 nautical miles depending on payload, reserves, routing, winds, and temperature.
Most original CJs were delivered with early-generation avionics by today's standards. Many aircraft have since been upgraded with Garmin GPS/NAV/COM equipment, GTN 750/750Xi units, modern transponders, ADS-B, and other panel improvements. A smaller number have received more extensive cockpit upgrades including Garmin-based retrofit solutions.
With 359 aircraft produced from 1993 through 1999, the Citation CJ remains an appealing choice for buyers who want Citation reliability, single-pilot capability, efficient operating economics, and a lower acquisition cost than later CJ variants.
